New York LaGuardia International Airport (LGA)
Airport Information
(New York, New York - NY, USA)

Situated within the Flushing area and next to Flushing Bay itself, New York's LaGuardia International Airport (LGA) is also close to Rikers Island, Tallman Island and Wards Island. LaGuardia is roughly 13 km / 8 miles east of New York City itself and considerable investments over the past decade have reduced the overcrowding problems and flight delays that the airport has suffered in the past.

Busy months at LaGuardia Airport can see well over two million passengers arriving and departing, over 90 percent of which are domestic. Many of the flights fly over New York's famous Shea Stadium, where the New York Mets baseball team is based. This is often known to cause disruption to any baseball games being played, although does offer exceptional birds-eye views for passengers.

Official taxis are never far away at LaGuardia Airport and are amongst the most popular ways to reach the many districts of Manhattan, such as the Bronx, Brooklyn, Greenwich Village, Harlem, the Lower East Side and Queens. Public buses and shuttles are also popular and include the ETS Air Shuttle, Super Shuttle Manhattan and the New York Airport Service Express Bus. Delta Water Shuttles provide an alternative option and a particularly scenic way to reach Manhattan.

New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) Information: History and Facilities
In the mid-thirties, New York's mayor at that time, Fiorello LaGuardia, led a strong campaign to develop a more central airport in New York, as he felt that the existing Newark Airport was simply too far away. Eventually it was decided that the small, centrally located North Beach Airport should be drastically overhauled and redeveloped, and a budget of more than $20 million was allocated for this task. Covering just over 500 acres / 200 hectares, the new New York Municipal Airport was opened in 1939, soon to be named as the New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA).

There are plenty of passenger amenities located all around New York LaGuardia Airport and it is highly likely that you will find exactly what you require without the need to even leave the terminal. Facilities within the Central Terminal Building are especially comprehensive and include two food courts, bars and pubs, Wachovia cash machines, US$ currency exchange, a Laptop Lane Business Center, and a shopping concourse. Popular stores include Discover New York, Duty Free America, Hudson News, Metropolitan Museum of Art Store and the National Geographic.
